As law enforcement officers from around the country gather to discuss best practices and new technologies, alternative fuel vehicles are sure to be at the top of the agenda.

Propane autogas is an ideal fuel for sheriff’s fleets because it’s dependable, cost-effective and won’t affect vehicle performance. With the bi-fuel Prins VSI autogas system, used by Alliance AutoGas when converting gasoline vehicles to run on autogas, officers have increased vehicle range because the system automatically reverts to gasoline if the autogas tank runs out. Also, this versatile system is attractive for sheriff’s fleets because it can be switched from retiring vehicles to newer models with very little cost or vehicle downtime.

Running on autogas also saves fleets significantly on fuel costs–right now upwards of $1.80 per gallon versus gasoline–a savings that counties can put back into the pockets of taxpayers or other programs. And since propane autogas is a cleaner-burning fuel than gasoline, autogas vehicles require less maintenance and the engines last longer.

Alliance AutoGas has helped many sheriff’s fleets across the U.S. switch to propane autogas. Fleets such as the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office save thousands on fuel costs and reduce emissions with clean autogas cruisers. Deputies say they love the performance, reliability and ease of operating propane autogas vehicles.

Fleet spotlight: The Polk County Sheriff’s Office http://www.autogasfleet.com/2013/06/fleet-spotlight-the-polk-county-sheriffs-office/ http://www.autogasfleet.com/2013/06/fleet-spotlight-the-polk-county-sheriffs-office/#comments Tue, 04 Jun 2013 14:21:22 +0000 http://autogasfleet.com/?p=1366 Continue reading ]]> For this week’s fleet spotlight, we’re taking a closer look at an Oregon sheriff’s fleet that’s saving thousands of dollars on fuel costs and reducing its vehicle maintenance needs with 10 propane autogas vehicles.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office will reduce its fuel costs by more than $20,000 annually with the new propane-powered patrol cars. Conversions and fueling are provided through Alliance AutoGas, with West Coast flagship fuel provider Blue Star Gas at the helm. Converted vehicles include seven Ford Crown Victorias, two Chevy Tahoes and one Ford F-350 pickup truck.

Sergeant Mark Garton of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said they were looking for a way to save money on the fuel costs since patrol cars average almost 25,000 miles each year. Now, not only will officers save money on fuel costs at the pump, there’s also a 50-cent-per-gallon federal alternative fuel tax credit that will go back into the pocket of the county–and back to services that benefit taxpayers.

Deputies haven’t detected any loss in vehicle performance with the propane-powered cruisers, and they’re also enjoying the versatility offered by the bi-fuel Prins VSI autogas system Alliance AutoGas uses for vehicle conversions.

“The ability to switch back to gasoline is a tremendous option for our fleet because in an emergency situation, we not only have a full tank of propane but also a backup full tank of gasoline,” said Sergeant Garton.

Fleet spotlight: Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office http://www.autogasfleet.com/2013/04/fleet-spotlight-buncombe-county-sheriffs-office/ http://www.autogasfleet.com/2013/04/fleet-spotlight-buncombe-county-sheriffs-office/#comments Tue, 16 Apr 2013 14:00:29 +0000 http://autogasfleet.com/?p=1298 Continue reading ]]> In light of the featured article in this month’s Fleet Maintenance Magazine, today we’re taking a look at how the Buncombe County, North Carolina, Sheriff’s Office is benefiting from operating fleet vehicles on clean, affordable, American-made propane autogas.

The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office converted 10 Ford Crown Victorias to run on autogas with funding through the Southeast Propane Autogas Development Program, which administered by Virginia Clean Cities. The new clean vehicles will not only displace 20 tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year, they will also save the county more than $13,000 annually on fuel costs. Each year, the sheriff’s cruisers travel an average of almost 25,000 miles and will use around 17,000 gallons of propane autogas.

From the article:

“We were looking at two main things when it came to switching to alternative fuel vehicles,” said Buncombe County Sheriff Van Duncan. “We wanted to boost our bottom line in terms of fuel cost savings and also have cleaner-burning cars on the road.”

Propane autogas was the practical fuel choice, he added, because it supports these goals and utilizes an American-made fuel. Plus, there isn’t a noticeable difference in vehicle performance other than the “motor runs a little quieter” on autogas.

Alliance AutoGas provides vehicle conversions and fueling for fleets in the Southeast Propane Autogas Development Program. Sheriff Duncan is particularly pleased with the bi-fuel Prins VSI (Vapor Sequential Injection) autogas conversion systems, distributed by Alliance in the U.S.

“The ability to switch back to gasoline is a tremendous option for law enforcement fleets,” said Sheriff Duncan. “It’s just one button on the center of the dash and you’re back to running on gasoline.”

The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office will be recognized with a Clean Air Excellence Award from the Western North Carolina Regional Air Quality Agency May 14 in Asheville, N.C.

Fleet Focus: Carroll County Sheriff’s Office http://www.autogasfleet.com/2013/01/fleet-focus-carroll-county-sheriffs-office/ http://www.autogasfleet.com/2013/01/fleet-focus-carroll-county-sheriffs-office/#comments Tue, 15 Jan 2013 15:00:05 +0000 http://autogasfleet.com/?p=1162 Continue reading ]]> Today’s post puts the spotlight on a propane autogas fleet we briefly mentioned in last week’s news roundup: the Carroll County, Ga., Sheriff’s Office. Part of the Southeast Propane Autogas Development Program from Virginia Clean Cities, the Carroll County Sheriff’s fleet is saving an estimated $135,000 annually in fuel costs with 36 autogas-powered vehicles. The law enforcement fleet expects to enjoy upwards of $170,000 in fuel savings while eliminating more than 130 tons of emissions each year once all 46 vehicles are up and running in 2013.

Here’s what Sheriff Terry Langley had to say:

“At first there were some questions about the flammability of the fuel, to which we explained that the fuel is as safe as gasoline – in fact, the autogas tanks are many times more puncture-resistant than gasoline tanks,” said Sheriff Langley. “With a little bit of education and fueling training, the officers felt comfortable operating the autogas vehicles. Now we even have officers request to drive the propane vehicles because they have better pickup.”

Their department’s work often includes interstate travel, and their officers have not had issues locating propane autogas fueling stations in other states.

“The move to propane autogas has been an excellent one for our county,” said Sheriff Langley. “We have achieved more control over our budget, it’s a safe fuel that burns cleaner and our officers like the vehicle performance. I wish we had made the switch sooner.”

Sheriff Langley first looked into alternative fuel for his fleet to combat budget problems caused by fluctuating gasoline prices. He says propane autogas was the most practical option, and that the autogas vehicle program has been well-received by the county’s officers.

Though regular readers of this blog may know all about SPADP, here’s a little more info about this regional autogas program: SPADP is made possible by funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Clean Cities Program. The Alliance AutoGas network provides autogas vehicle conversions, fuel supply and support for SPADP. Alliance partner Force 911 in Pendergrass, Ga., performed the Carroll County conversions, while Alliance founder Blossman Gas provided infrastructure for two fueling stations and supplies the county autogas year-round.
