It’s election day! Time to get out and exercise your civic duty by voting on the next President of the United States, as well as state and local representatives and policies. With the fallout of Hurricane Sandy putting the spotlight on our nation’s reliance on gasoline, America’s energy future may be a topic on many voters’ minds as they enter the polls.

One thing’s for certain: I think we all know it’s going to be all-election news all the time today. Luckily, there are many interesting interactive activities to keep you occupied and plugged-in to this national event. The Wall Street Journal is asking readers to share their election-day photos on Instagram or Twitter by using hashtag #WSJvote. More of a video person? YouTube wants your election-day videos, too! You can post them on YouTube, tweet them to @YouTubePolitics or include #YouTubePolitics in the video title.

USA Today has an Electoral Vote Tracker tool that allows you to craft various routes to victory for each candidate. CNET provides a roundup of three election-day apps to help you stay on top the the latest developments–or, in some cases, just offers a roleplaying game that “pits Obama and Romney in a virtual slugfest.” Facebook is also gearing up for an election day “blitz” of features, which will include sending out messages to users’ smartphones and showing a real-time map of their voting activity.

Perhaps you want to go the other way; you’ve voted early and you want to avoid all election activity. The Washington Post has you covered with eight ways to escape election day insanity.

If you haven’t voted yet, it’s easier than ever to educate yourself beforehand by checking your local newspaper’s website or visiting Vote411.org from the League of Women Voters. This helpful site offers personalized voting information, including a handy guide that outlines all the issues at hand, even tailored to your local community. Happy voting!

Declare energy independence this 4th of July http://www.autogasfleet.com/2012/07/declare-energy-independence-this-4th-of-july/ http://www.autogasfleet.com/2012/07/declare-energy-independence-this-4th-of-july/#comments Tue, 03 Jul 2012 14:00:21 +0000 http://autogasfleet.com/?p=827 Continue reading ]]> Many of us will come together with family and friends on the 4th of July to fire up the grill and celebrate the pivotal time in our history when America declared its independence. But this year, let’s make Independence Day more than just about our past. Let’s take this opportunity to put the spotlight on a pressing issue for citizens today and for generations to come: our nation’s energy independence.

When the price of gasoline falls as it has recently, we tend to forget the pain of $4 fuel prices. But the fact remains that fleets and drivers nationwide are negatively impacted every time the price of oil goes up. When gasoline prices skyrocket, businesses may be forced to cut jobs and public agencies may have to reduce services. If we were less dependent on foreign oil, it would lower the price we pay for vehicle fuel and help avoid the repercussions of gasoline price shocks.

Switching more U.S. fleets to run on domestic alternative fuels will have a positive impact on more than just the environment–it will also enhance our national energy security by decreasing our dependence on foreign oil. Ninety-eight percent of the U.S. supply of propane autogas is made right here in America, so fleets running on this affordable clean fuel are creating American jobs while doing their part to ensure our future energy independence.

Fleets that run on American-made autogas pay at least $1.25 per gallon less than gasoline at the pump, significantly reduce harmful pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions, all while running on a dependable, high-performance fuel. And for businesses and municipalities that rely heavily on fleet transportation, autogas is more affordable to implement compared to other domestic clean fuels. (The Alliance AutoGas website offers a helpful side-by-side comparison of autogas vs. compressed natural gas, which illustrates exactly why autogas is a more attractive option for fleets looking to switch to alternative fuel at little-to-no upfront cost.) The affordability of autogas infrastructure and vehicle conversions makes it a vital resource to jumpstart widespread alternative fuel adoption for America’s fleets.

There are more than 2,500 autogas fueling stations already in place throughout the U.S. (and growing), and fleets across the country are already deploying thousands of autogas vehicles each year. Autogas may not be the only answer to power our nation’s fleets, but—as the most cost-effective fuel on the market that’s widely available, now—autogas will play a major role in making our dependence on imported oil a problem of the past.

Domestic Alternative Fuel for Energy Security http://www.autogasfleet.com/2012/05/domestic-alternative-fuel-for-energy-security/ http://www.autogasfleet.com/2012/05/domestic-alternative-fuel-for-energy-security/#comments Tue, 22 May 2012 15:03:05 +0000 http://autogasfleet.com/?p=747 Continue reading ]]> The approach of Memorial Day signals the kick-off of the summer travel season. But more importantly, it is a time to honor those who have served our country to protect our freedoms.

This day of honor not only reminds us of our duty to country, but also brings to mind the role energy plays in national security.

In the month of April alone, the United States imported hundreds of millions barrels of oil, sending billions of dollars overseas and furthering our dependence on foreign oil. We are invariably tied to the economies and political volatilities of the nations that supply our energy and our fuel.

America’s fleets face increasing challenges from fuel costs to demands for environmental responsibility. But the fuel choices U.S. fleets make to meet these challenges can also work to reduce our nation’s dependence on foreign oil.

As our nation edges toward a clean break from foreign oil, individuals, business and governments can work together toward a common goal of energy security. By using American-made resources like propane autogas, our commercial transportation sector can help us make great strides toward this critical goal.

Ninety-eight percent of our nation’s propane autogas is produced right here in the U.S., and fleets operating on autogas can save $1.50 per gallon compared to gasoline.  At a time when gasoline and diesel prices are impacting our economy across the board, moving toward inexpensive, domestically produced fuel is increasingly practical and a proactive step toward protecting our nation’s interests.
